Acan Media Globalized

The French version of this siteRobert from The Wine Conversation and Thirst for Rioja blogs commented about how American-focused my list of must-read blogs is. And he’s absolutely correct.

So to take a step in the direction of global unity, I offer an extended list of links on my Blogroll on the right and translation into French, Italian, Spanish, German and Portuguese. Since the translation plug-in uses Google Language services, the results are probably entertaining for native speakers but it appears from my logs that some readers speak those languages. Just click on the appropriate flag for your language to translate the site.

If you do, please let me know how well, or poorly, this works as my high school French is quite rusty. If there are wine blogs in languages other than English that I should link to, please add them in the comments.

Tim, have you ever considered using a service like Amazon Mechanical Turk (”mturk”) to get a blog posting translated by a real human being? Might be something worth considering.

An interesting idea that might be worth exploring if there was enough demand. My concern would be that I could not tell how good the translation was from Google’s results so I’m not qualified to judge the quality of Mechanical Turk output either. Perhaps if I had a French or Spanish colleague that would work?

    Hi Tim,

Just took a look at the Portuguese version. I can tell that translation software has come a long way… a few of the sentences actually translated perfectly. But really only a few sentences… Overall, in my opinion, it is very difficult for a Portuguese speaking person to read through the translated version. Funny at times, but overall very unpleasant reading.

Another thing… a vast majority of Portuguese internet-savvy people can read English very well, so I question the need for offering a translated version.

    My 2c.

Thanks for the feedback Marco. I’ll leave in on for a few more days and if I get similar feedback on other languages I’ll turn it off.

    Cheers
